At least nine injured in Germany after train collides with bus

At least nine people were injured - two of them seriously - when a train collided with a bus in the German state of Lower Saxony early Wednesday, a police spokesman said.

A bendy bus carrying 15 people had come to a halt on a railroad crossing in the town of Melle at about 8:30 am (0630 GMT) and its rear was hit by a goods train, the police spokesman said.

The bus, which was acting as rail replacement service, had stopped behind the crossing to let passengers disembark. It is not clear whether the driver was aware that the rear of the bus was still on the tracks, police said.

A spokeswoman for the rail company responsible for the goods train said that its conductor was the only person on the train at the time of the accident. Police added that the man was suffering from shock.

Nine people were brought to hospital and two helicopters were deployed in an ongoing rescue effort, the police spokesman said.
