London mayor: Trump's Muslim ban shows ignorance, aids extremists

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's plan to ban Muslims from the United States reflects his "ignorant view of Islam" and could make the world less safe by "alienating mainstream Muslims," London's first Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan, said on Tuesday.

Trump's campaign first announced in December that the bombastic billionaire was calling for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States" in the wake of a terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California, and he has since refused to back down from the stance.

Responding to Khan's election as London mayor last week, Trump told the New York Times on Monday that "there will always be exceptions" to his proposed ban on Muslims.

"Donald Trump's ignorant view of Islam could make both our countries less safe - it risks alienating mainstream Muslims around the world and plays into the hands of the extremists," Khan told London's Evening Standard newspaper.

"This isn't just about me - it's about my friends, my family and everyone who comes from a background similar to mine, anywhere in the world," he said.

"Donald Trump and those around him think that western liberal values are incompatible with mainstream Islam - London has proved him wrong."
