Man from Ethiopia killed during clashes between migrants in France

A man from Ethiopia was killed after two brawls broke out near a migrant camp close to the northern French city of Calais early Tuesday, local officials said.

Six people were also injured in the brawls that saw confrontations between migrants from African countries like Sudan and Eritrea and migrants from Afghanistan, the office of the Pas-de-Calais prefecture said.

The man, 37, was transported to the hospital in Calais and died from an apparent knife wound to his chest, the officials said, adding that an investigation had been opened.

In February, French authorities dismantled part of the migrant camp near Calais where thousands of people had set up makeshift dwellings in the hope of crossing the English Channel to Britain.

Some moved to a nearby accommodation centre, and the Interior Ministry encouraged migrants to apply for asylum in France and move to other parts of the country with more lodging. But many migrants remain camped around Calais.
