Mayors of Paris, London pledge unity despite Brexit

The mayors of Paris and London said they would work together despite the outcome of the British referendum, in a joint letter published on Monday.

London's Sadiq Khan, who campaigned for the Remain campaign that lost last week when Britain voted to leave the European Union, said in a joint letter with Paris' Anne Hidalgo that the two cities shared a culture and history.

"Despite the outcome of the EU referendum, our two cities must now work more closely together than ever before in order to deliver on our shared agendas," Hidalgo and Khan wrote in a letter published in French newspaper Le Parisien and the Financial Times.

Saying that cities were the defining political entity of the 21st century, Khan and Hidalgo declared that they were, "today committing to work ever more closely together in order to build far stronger alliances between cities across Europe and around the world."

Over the weekend, Khan had pledged that Europeans would continue to play a part in the future of London when he appeared at the city's annual Gay Pride parade. London voted largely for Remain in the referendum that saw sharp regional voting differences.
