Merkel to receive International Four Freedoms Medal

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will receive the International Four Freedoms Medal for her handling of several crises in Europe.

"In the current migrant and refugee crisis Merkel is committed to Europe's humanitarian duty to protect those fleeing war and conflict in the Middle East, Africa and Asia," according to a press release issued Wednesday from the Roosevelt Foundation, which promotes the values of the award.

She also played a crucial role in managing the financial crisis in the European Union and led the negotiations to reach a diplomatic solution in the Ukrainian crisis, the press release says.

The International Four Freedoms Medal is presented to men, women and organizations dedicated to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want and freedom from fear. The values are derived from a speech by former US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1941.

Previous award winners include former US Presidents Harry S Truman and Jimmy Carter as well as former South African President Nelson Mandela.

The award is scheduled to be presented to Merkel in April in Middelburg, the Netherlands.
