More than 30 PKK fighters killed in Turkey

At least 30 fighters for the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) have been killed in Turkey's south-east region in the past two days, the Turkish Army said Sunday.

The army said "13 members of a separatist terrorist organization were neutralized" on Saturday in the town of Cizre.

Another four were killed in the town of Silopi, and three in the Sur district of the mainly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir, the army said.

Also in Sur, a policeman and a soldier were killed on Sunday in an attack by the PKK, state news agency Anadolu reported.

Since the current offensive began in the middle of December, almost 450 PKK fighters have been killed in these three locations alone.

During an operation against a PKK hideout in the eastern city of Van, 12 PKK fighters and a police officer were killed in a gun battle, Anadolu reported, citing the authorities.

The authorities seized 30 grenades, 12 rifles and a machine gun in the operation.

A controversial curfew, which has drawn criticism from human rights campaigners, was imposed on Sur on December 2, and on Cizre and Silopi on December 14. Van does not have a curfew.
