No foul play in German sailor's death, Philippine investigation shows

A German sailor found dead in a drifting yacht in the southern Philippines died from a heart attack, police said Wednesday, as investigators ruled out foul play.

“There were no signs that he was killed, no bruises or wounds on his body,” police spokeswoman Goldie Siega told dpa by phone from Barobo town in Surigao del Sur province, 877 kilometres south of Manila.

“The cause of death is acute myocardial infarction based on the autopsy by regional crime laboratory,” said Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor, national police spokesman.

Fishermen found Manfred Fritz Bajorat's body inside the radio room of the yacht, which was 140 kilometres off the coast of Barobo, on February 25.

“The German national is estimated to have died more or less seven days earlier," Mayor said.

Police earlier released photos of the body, which appeared mummified by the conditions and sitting near the radio.

Bajorat, who was believed to be in his late 50s, was separated from his wife, who passed away in 2010. Their daughter requested that no more photos from the yacht be released, Siega said.

"The German Embassy called to relay the wishes of the daughter not to release any more of the gruesome photos for their privacy," she said.

Bajorat was believed to be travelling alone, and there was no indication anyone was accompanying him on the boat, Siega said.
