Pahor says EU will face inevitable changes regardless of Brexit referendum outcome

Slovenian President Borut Pahor said in Ljubljana on Thursday that regardless of the outcome of the British referendum, the European Union will have to undergo inevitable changes.

Regardless of the referendum results in Great Britain, the EU is faced with "inevitable changes" because it cannot survive in its present form, Pahor told a news conference after his talks with Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

Regardless of the future development of the bloc, Slovenia must remain in "the strong core" of EU countries that are most strongly connected with one another and are members of the Schengen and the euro area, he added.

After the talks, Grabar-Kitarovic said that despite the problems in the EU, the two countries would continue to encourage reforms and changes in neighbouring countries aspiring to join the bloc.

"We need more of Europe and not less," the Croatian president said, adding that enlargement and integration of neighbouring countries was in the interest of the Slovenian and Croatian economies and that integration enabled the stability and financial prosperity of countries joining the European family.
