The parents of a baby girl who has been taken into care after a classified advertisement appeared online for the sale of an infant have denied any involvement in the scheme, police in the German city of Duisburg said on Friday.
The 40-day-old girl was taken into state care during a raid at the family's home in the western city on Wednesday.
Police said they are certain she is the baby who was being offered for 5,000 euros (5,500 dollars) in a post on eBay Kleinanzeigen, a popular online platform for buying and selling household items in Germany.
Employees at the website contacted the police after the ad was posted late Tuesday with a picture of the infant.
Police said the family that posted the ad were refugees, without giving details on their nationality.
They have opened an investigation into possible human trafficking and are trying to establish who was behind the posting as well as whether it was a serious offer.
Investigators have said that other family members had also used the internet connection at the flat.
