Paris weighs setting up outdoor area for nudists

The French capital may be known for its well-heeled residents, but those seeking a non-sartorial experience could soon get an alternative to clothes: Paris approved a proposal to set up its first outdoor nudist area.

The city council's decision to sign off on the plan by politicians from The Greens party was confirmed Tuesday by a spokesman for the city hall. Members voted on the proposal late Monday.

The council directed the city to study the possibility of an open-air nudist site, which could open as soon as next summer.

Large parks at the fringes of Paris, such as Vincennes or Boulogne, were put forward as possible options to host the site, which would be clearly marked.

Deputy Mayor Bruno Julliard was quoted last week by newspaper Le Figaro as saying that a nudist site "doesn't harm anyone. We are going to do it in a way that respects the sensitivities of everyone."

The lawmakers who proposed the measures pointed to similar spaces in Barcelona, Berlin and Munich. France is a popular destination for nudism enthusiasts.
