Police boost security after attempted abduction near British air base

British police increased security Thursday after an apparent attempt to abduct a soldier near an air base in the eastern county of Norfolk.

The soldier was jogging outside the Royal Air Force Marham base when two men in their 20s of "Middle Eastern origin in appearance" approached him and tried to push him into a car, Norfolk police said.

The soldier, who was not in uniform, fought off one of the men, bundling him to the ground, before the second suspect approached carrying a knife.

The soldier then ran off, military officials said, adding that they are investigating the incident "as an attempted abduction."

"The motivation for the attack remains unclear at this time, and whilst we are currently unable to discount terrorism, there are a number of other possible hypotheses," Detective Superintendent Paul Durham said in a statement.

"Visible patrols continue in the area, and officers will be carrying out house-to-house enquiries and detailed searches of the scene," Durham said.

The victim was not injured, the police said.

British military personnel were warned to stay vigilant after a uniformed infantryman was murdered in 2013 in London by two men who claimed that they were inspired by Islamic extremist ideology.

Another man was jailed last month for plotting a similar attack.
