Police: Syrian man confesses to stabbing pregnant sister in Germany

One of two Syrian men suspected of stabbing to death their pregnant sister has admitted to committing the crime, German police said Monday.

The 26-year-old man, who was taken into police custody alongside his younger brother on Friday near the south-western German city of Trier, said he repeatedly stabbed his 30-year-old sister with a kitchen knife during an argument, resulting in her death.

Police quoted prosecutors as saying that they were working on the assumption the crime may have been a so-called honour killing, an act committed to protect the supposed reputation of a family or community.

"There are rumours that the woman had an affair: That could be a motive for the crime," police spokesman Rudi Neu told dpa.

The stabbing occurred in the apartment building the woman, who was in her second trimester, had been living in with her husband and their 6-year-old child since last year.

The husband sustained injuries during the attack, but it remains unclear what role he played in the altercation.

The admission comes against the backdrop of a fierce debate in Germany about crimes against women perpetrated by immigrants.

Scores of sexual assaults and thefts that occurred in Cologne and other German cities on New Year's Eve have been partially linked to asylum seekers, inflaming an ongoing national debate about the country's migration policy.
