Police: Terrorism not a motive in Cologne gun-and-knife attack

A German homicide division is investigating a shooting and stabbing that took place early Monday in Cologne and left one man seriously injured, but police have ruled out terrorism as a motive.

"The reasons for the crime are wholly unclear at this time. There is currently no evidence of a terrorist motive, nor of (people) running amok. Investigations are ongoing," Cologne police said in a statement.

Police were called to a central Cologne restaurant at 3:43 am (0143 GMT), the statement said, and officers found broken glass, blood stains and empty cartridges upon arrival at the scene.

The suspects had fled the scene by the time police arrived, but several people were apprehended and two vehicles confiscated in the hours after the incident, police said.

The 34-year-old man wounded in the shooting was taken to hospital with stabbing and gunshot injuries to the body and head, police said.

Germany has been on high alert since four attacks in the space of a week last month - three of them committed by asylum seekers and two claimed by Islamic State - left 12 people dead, three of them attackers.
