Polish treasure hunters clear land before dig for Nazi gold

Two amateur historians began preparations on Friday to excavate a site in south-western Poland where they say a World-War-II-era armoured train hidden underground for decades could contain gold amassed by the Nazis.

Piotr Koper and Andreas Richter claim to have discovered an armoured German train in an underground tunnel between Wroclaw and Walbrzych last year using ground-penetrating radar, and they are now leading a team of around 35 people to excavate the site on August 16.

On Friday, the team began levelling the terrain and clearing trees on the cordoned-off dig site, located at rail kilometre 65 between Wroclaw and Walbrzych.

Results from dig, which will be filmed and streamed online, are expected within two days.

"The excavation will give us a clear answer," team spokesman Andrzej Gaik said. "Is it there or not?"

Rumours have abounded in the region for decades that the Nazis had hidden gold and other treasures from advancing Soviet troops towards the end of World War II, but no stash has ever been found.
