Poll: Merkel's conservatives at lowest point since 2012

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative alliance is polling at its lowest rating since 2012, according to opinion polls published on Sunday.

The latest poll by Emnid for the Sunday edition of the Bild tabloid showed Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), on just 33 per cent, down one percentage point from the previous survey.

Other pollsters showed similar low points for the CDU/CSU: The Political Barometer of the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen electoral research group showed the conservatives on 35 per cent, their lowest rating since June 2012, while Insa had them on 32 per cent.

The anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) gained one point to reach 13 per cent in the Emnid survey for the Bild newspaper. The hard-left party Die Linke dropped a point to 8 per cent, its worst rating for a year.

The other parties remained unchanged: Merkel's grand coalition partners the Social Democrats (SPD) were on 22 per cent, the opposition Greens on 13, while the liberal FDP, which is not represented in the current parliament, were on 6 per cent.

Emnid polled a representative group of 1,405 people between March 24 and 30.
