Report: Belgian police missed evidence in Paris terrorist attacks

Belgian police in investigating the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris made crucial mistakes or did not pursue important leads in at least 13 cases, according to a report by a Belgian parliamentary committee that came to light via the Belgian daily De Tijd.

The reason for the mistakes - which include missing evidence against the later suicide bombers Brahim Abdeslam and Bilal Hadfi as well as suspected collaborator Salah Abdeslam - was lack of personnel, among other things, the report said.

In a series of attacks in Paris in November of last year, extremists with links to the Islamic State terrorist militia killed 130 people. A total of nine of the attackers were killed by police in subsequent raids.

One of those killed was the suspected mastermind of the attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud. He along with a number of other attackers and suspected plotters was a Belgian national.

Peter De Waele, a spokesman for the Belgian police, expressed annoyance at the publication of the report, telling the VRT Nieuws broadcaster that the police could not respond to the allegations due to confidentiality constraints.
