Report: Russia behind cyberattack on German parliament

The Russian government is thought to have been behind a six-month cyberattack, which crippled the computer system of the German lower house of parliament last year, the weekly Spiegel magazine reported.

German authorities are convinced that the Trojan virus attack on the Bundestag's Parlacom network is "clearly" linked to "a Russian military intelligence service," a top security official told Spiegel.

He said that security breaches targeting Germany and other NATO member states in the previous years have followed a similar pattern.

Hackers besieged the parliamentary computer system over a six-month period, which ended on May 20, 2015, by planting Trojan viruses that allowed them to access huge amounts of data. The entire system was shut down for days as a result of the cyberattack.

This is not the first time that the issue has been linked to Russia. A Russian government-funded hacker group, known as Sofacy or sometimes referred to as APT28, was flagged in June 2015 as the suspected perpetrators of the attack.
