Reports: Sixth man arrested in Brussels terrorism investigation

Belgian authorities arrested a sixth man on Friday night, in addition to five men seized as part of investigations into terrorist attacks on Paris and Brussels, Belgian media reported Saturday.

Federal prosecutors announced on Friday that they had arrested Mohamed Abrini - a key suspect in the terrorist attacks in Paris last November that left 130 dead - as well as four other suspects. They are being investigated for links to last month's attacks in Brussels, in which 32 people were killed.

Belgian broadcaster VRT and De Standaard newspaper named the sixth arrested man as Bilal El Makhoukhi, a man condemned last year in a mass trial against members of the terrorist group Sharia4Belgium.

El Makhoukhi had been sentenced to five years in prison but was released early, they reported. He was arrested in the Brussels neighbourhood of Laken.

His connection to the investigations into the Paris and Brussels attacks was not immediately clear.

Meanwhile, the Belgian government agreed early Saturday to increase its spending on security as well as supporting economic sectors hit by last month's terrorist attacks on Brussels, as it finalized its budget plans, the Belga news agency reported.
