Russia builds Arctic missile system as it ramps up regional presence

Russia is developing a missile system for surface-to-air defence in the Arctic, state news agency TASS reported Wednesday.

Russia has been beefing up its military presence in the Arctic in recent years as an overall warming of the region's climate creates increased transportation opportunities and access to natural resources.

The missile system will be based on Russia's existing Tor system, which specializes in short-range counterattacks on incoming aircraft and cruise missiles, TASS reported.

The developer, Russian state weaponry manufacturer Almaz-Antey, has also designed the powerful S-300 and Buk missile systems.

"The research and development work within the project for the creation of an Arctic version of the Tor short-range air defence missile system has been started," the company was quoted as saying.

Last March, Russia conducted a major military exercise in the Arctic involving 38,000 personnel, as well as aircraft and submarines.

Weeks later, the defence ministers of the five Nordic nations - Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland - released a joint declaration that Europe must strengthen military collaboration to counter Russian aggression in Eastern Europe.

"Russia's actions are the biggest challenge to European security," the declaration said.
