Somali asylum-seeker arrested in Italy for incitement to terrorism

A Somali imam has been arrested on charges of spreading Islamist propaganda among fellow asylum seekers hosted in a reception centre, Italian police said Wednesday.

The suspect was apprehended from a former beach holiday resort near Campobasso, southern Italy, which was turned into a migrant reception centre.

Police released a pro-Islamic State video as evidence of the suspect's proselytising activities and, in a Twitter message, said he was "perhaps organizing an attack in Rome."

According to ANSA news agency reports from a press conference in Campobasso, the man would urge migrants to turn themselves into suicide bombers, telling them "let's go to Rome and let's start from the train station."

"We can't have zero risk, but the arrest in Campobasso shows that prevention systems work. We cannot distract ourselves, and our sincere thanks go to the work carried out by police forces," Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said in parliament.
