Spanish court releases Sindicic

Former Yugoslav secret service agent Vinko Sindicic has not been extradited from Spain to Croatia where a court in Rijeka wanted him for perjury in the trial against other former Yugoslav agents at a trial in Munich, because the German judicial authorities find that Sindicic gave a true testimony against Josip Perkovic and Zdravko Mustac indicted for complicity to murder of dissident Stjepan Djurekovic in Bavaria.

The 72-year-old Sindicic was arrested on an international warrant in Burgos in northern Spain on November 9. In 2008, he testified at the trial of Krunoslav Prates, a former collaborator of the former Yugoslav secret service UDBA whom a Munich court sentenced to life imprisonment in 2008 for aiding and abetting the murder of Djurekovic near Munich in 1983. Sindicic's testimony gave rise to suspicion about the roles of Perkovic and Mustac in the Djurekovic assassination, which was why the Munich court opened proceedings against the two.

The Madrid court received the explanation from Munich that Sindicic's statements were not false and decided that there was no longer any reason to hand him over to Croatia, and he was released after being behind bars in a prison 42 km from Madrid for 55 days.
