Sweden opens Volkswagen emissions probe

Swedish prosecutors said Tuesday a prelimiary probe has been launched into German car maker Volkswagen over manipulating diesel emission tests.

Chief prosecutor Alf Johansson of the anti-corruption unit said the preliminary investigation centred on gross fraud and falsifying documents, and the company faces corporate fines if convicted.

"We are aware that a great many investigations are under way in Germany," Johansson told dpa. "In the end, we might drop the case because they are sufficient."

Investigations are also under way in other countries in the wake of the scandal that emerged in September when US authorities accused VW of installing software in its diesel cars to circumvent air pollution standards.

An estimated 225,000 vehicles made in the years 2009-2015 were affected in Sweden.

The Swedish prosecutors said they were to cooperate with foreign authorities and Volkswagen's Swedish unit, Volkswagen Group Svenska AB.

The Swedish unit said it welcomed the probe, and was continuing to assist affected vehicle owners.
