Three fugitive left-wing German terrorists linked to robberies

German police were Tuesday searching for three fugitive former members of the left-wing terrorist group Red Army Faction (RAF) in connection with failed attempts last year to rob armored security vehicles.

The trio are suspected of having attacked money transporters in the cities of Bremen and Wolfsburg.

The RAF disbanded in 1998 after mounting a campaign of bombings, assassinations, kidnappings and bank robberies across Germany for three decades.

In June, three masked assailants shot at a security van at a supermarket near Bremen.

DNA tests carried out on two cars left at the scene turned up genetic matches with Daniela Klette, Ernst-Volker Wilhelm Staub and Burkhard Garweg, who like several other RAF members vanished when the group was disbanded, state broadcaster NDR reported.

In the central city of Verden, prosecutors said based on new DNA evidence they believed Staub, Garweg and Klette attacked a money transporter in December in the northern city of Wolfsburg.

Prosecutors have ruled out a terrorist background to the attacks, saying that they believed the robberies were attempted to help finance the trio's life underground.

The robbery attempts in both Wolfsburg and Bremen failed and the three fled without any valuables. No one was injured in the attacks.

DNA traces of the three former RAF members were also discovered at a another attack on an armored van in the city of Duisburg in 1999, NDR reported.
