Truck plows into a crowd in southern France, casualties reported

A truck plowed into a crowd of revelers after a fireworks display celebrating Bastille Day in the southern French city of Nice Thursday evening, according to reports.

Authorities say the incidcent could have been an intentional attack and have called on residents to remain in the homes, according the AFP news agency. There are also reports of casualties, though no details.

The newspaper Nice Matin reported that panic and confusion along the famous the seaside promenade. Videos posted on social media showed people running away.

France had mobilized extra security for the national day of celebration. Approximately 11,500 security personnel were on hand for the traditional military parade on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

Bastille Day is celebrated every July 14 in memory of the storming of the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, which is seen as the start of the French revolution.
