Tusk visits refugee centre in Slovenia

European Council President Donald Tusk on Wednesday visited a refugee centre in Dobova, Slovenia, where about 450 refugees and migrants are waiting to be directed north, Germany being their target destination.

Tusk visited Dobova, near the Croatian border, en route from Ljubljana to Zagreb, where he will discuss the migrant crisis with Croatia's state leadership.

Under an agreement with Croatia, Dobova is Slovenia's sole entry point for migrants. This year, nearly 100,000 refugees and migrants have passed through it. Croatia is bringing migrants to Dobova by train from its eastern town of Opatovac. A week ago, Slovenia stipulated that it will receive only one train with a maximum 580 migrants a day. Austria recently designated the Spielfeld border crossing as the only entry point for migrants arriving via Slovenia, limiting the number of those who can apply for asylum to 80 per day.

After last night's talks with Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar in Ljubljana, Tusk said coordination within the European Union was necessary to help Greece because it had the most problems because of the high number of migrants on its territory.

Greece needs our help the most and our joint responsibility is to help it as much we can, Tusk said, adding that cooperation with Turkey was also necessary to avoid a humanitarian disaster in case too many migrants headed for Europe and were stopped at the borders because of the different approaches to the migrant crisis.

Cerar underlined the need to effectively apply the Schengen regime towards migrants and to help Greece, which he said was faced with a humanitarian disaster, but added that one should acknowledge the difficulties which the states on the Balkan route had because of the migrant flow.

Until there is a joint solution and it is implemented, it's important to resort to solutions which pave the way for the resolution of the crisis, Cerar said.
