Ukrainian military shelling kills civilian, pro-Russian rebels say

Pro-Russian rebels on Thursday said Ukraine's military killed a civilian woman with shelling that hit a residential area, as both warring sides trade allegations of ceasefire violations.

The woman, around 50 years old, succumbed to severe shrapnel wounds inflicted when her village, Zaitseve, came under mortar fire last night, a rebel with the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic told Russian state news agency TASS.

Officials from Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) are expected to meet on Friday to discuss ways to mitigate the conflict, which has severely escalated in recent weeks.

The Ukrainian military on Thursday accused pro-Russian rebel forces of 85 ceasefire violations in the country's east the previous night.

"Russian occupation forces opened fire 85 times on positions of the Anti-Terrorist Operation: in particular, 38 times in the area of Donetsk, 22 - Mariupol and 25 - Luhansk," the Ukrainian military said in a statement.
