US Secretary of State warns against "revengeful" Brexit approach

US Secretary of State John Kerry warns the European Union against a "revengeful" approach following Britain's vote to leave the EU, calling on leaders to act in a "responsible, sensitive" and strategic manner.

"I think it is absolutely essential that we stay focused on how, in this transitional period, nobody loses their head, ... people don't start ginning up scatterbrained or revengeful premises," Kerry says during a visit to Brussels.

"It is now incumbent on leaders to implement the will of the people and to do so in a way that is responsible, sensitive, thoughtful and I hope strategic," he adds.

The United States cares about a strong EU but will also "maintain its special ... and strong relationship" with Britain, Kerry says. From Brussels, he is travelling to London for talks with British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and Prime Minister David Cameron.
