Vatican announces successor for scandal-tainted German "bling bishop"

Germany's so-called "bling bishop," who was removed from his post in Limburg after spending millions in church funds on extravagant home improvements, will be replaced by Georg Baetzing from Trier, the Vatican announced Friday.

Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst was summoned to the Vatican in 2013 after it emerged that he had spent 31 million euros (34 million dollars) on extravagant renovations including a two-seat, 15,000-euro bathtub and bronze window frames.

Tebartz-van Elst was placed on leave the following year and it later emerged he had been given a new post in Rome as a "delegate for catechesis" at the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization.

His replacement Baetzing previously served as vicar general in the Trier diocese. Both Limburg and Trier are part of the Archdiocese of Cologne.

Baetzing takes over from Manfred Grothe, who acted as the bishop of Limburg on an interim basis. The Limburg diocese comprises 645,000 Catholics in the German states of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate.
