Workers mask Banksy's teargas satire near French embassy in London

Workers in London covered a new artwork by secretive British street artist Banksy on Monday after he spray-painted a picture of a girl from the hit musical Les Miserables affected by teargas on a wall.

The work, an apparent protest at the use of teargas against migrants in the French port of Calais earlier this month, could be seen opposite the embassy in central London's Knightsbridge district from late Saturday until workers covered it with wooden panels mid-morning Monday.

It showed the fictional character Cosette as depicted on posters for Les Miserables, with added tears streaming from her eyes as teargas billows from a cannister beneath her.

Banksy posted photographs of the new work on his official website,

A QR code in the artwork linked to video footage on Youtube of French police using teargas as they attempted to evict hundreds of migrants from a camp in Calais on January 5 and 6.

The musical Les Miserables is based on Victor Hugo's novel of the same name.

Posters for the show are a common sight around London.

According to its website, the London production is the world's longest running musical. It has been shown in the city's West End since 1985.
