Late goal gives Russia 1-1 draw with England

Vasili Berezutski's stoppage-time goal earned Russia a dramatic 1-1 draw with England in their Euro 2016 opener on Saturday.Berezutski looped a header over England keeper Joe Hart in the second of three added minutes at Stade Velodrome. It canceled out Eric Dier's free-kick that gave England the lead in the 73rd minute.

“It’s disappointing because we were so close to a win in our first game,” Dier told reporters. “I thought it would have been well deserved.

“Our emotions went from a high to a low pretty quickly, but we have more games to look forward to and have to pick ourselves up.”

The result leaves the teams joint second in Group B behind Wales, who beat Slovakia 2-1 earlier Saturday.

“When you dominate a match as much as we did and play as well as we did then concede a goal two minutes into injury time, it feels much like a defeat than a draw,” England manager Roy Hodgson said.

“It was unfortunately for us a very, very good goal they scored to equalize and we'll have to accept that disappointment and move on.”

Russia next play Slovakia on Wednesday, while England meet Wales the following day.

The English made a strong start with the first chance falling to Adam Lallana, whose shot was palmed over the bar by Russia keeper Igor Akinfeev.
Harry Kane just missed getting his foot on Dele Alli's header at the back post and Akinfeev stopped Chris Smalling's header, before Sergei Ignashevich headed Russia's first chance straight at Hart.
Lallana then fired wide of the far post and Akinfeev punched away Wayne Rooney's shot from the edge of the area to keep it goalless at the half.
Russia made a promising start to the second half as Berezutski and Aleksandr Golovin were off target and Artem Dzyuba curled a shot just wide.
Akinfeev then made a one-handed save of Rooney's shot after the ball fell to the England captain just inside the area.
The English finally broke through with 17 minutes left when Dier smashed his free-kick over the wall into the top corner.
It looked to be the game-winner until a late corner led to Georgi Schennikov crossing to Berezutski, who outjumped Danny Rose and headed the ball over Hart and into the net.

"Fair play to Russia they stayed in it,” Hart said. “We’ve defended the corner but they’ve thrown players into the box.

“The player who scored had springs in his heels.”

England are now winless in the opening game of their nine appearances at the European Championship finals.
