Airbnb carries on despite lack of home-sharing laws in Singapore

Home-sharing rental service Airbnb said Monday it is working together with the Singapore government on laws for "responsible home sharing" despite short-term rentals not being legal in the city state.

"Singapore has stood as a global model of innovation ... and we're committed to collaborating with them to develop a regulatory framework that promotes responsible home sharing," the firm said in a statement to dpa.

The move comes amid a report by The Straits Times daily, citing comments by National Development Minister Lawrence Wong that Singapore will not shut down short-term rentals despite such ongoing activities being a "breach of faith."

"I think that's not about sharing... it's an intrusion into my private space which I think many people will find intolerable," Wong said, commenting on bought homes being used for short-term rental.

Public and private houses in Singapore are not allowed to be used for rentals under six months.

The government's Urban Redevelopment Authority has consulted the views of members of the public, but said in May that more time was needed to study the matter, hence the limbo on laws concerning short-term rentals.

However, Wong said that the government is "not saying no forever" to Airbnb and other home-sharing rental services.
