Analyst: Apple Watch two-thirds of 2015 smartwatch sales

The Apple Watch led the world smartwatch market in 2015, making up two-thirds of all sales, according to market research published Friday.

The research firm Canalys estimated Apple has sold more than 12 million of the high-fashion wearables since their debut in April, and more than 5 million in the December holiday sales period alone.

Rival Samsung's market share trails in second place, Canalys said, without specifying sales data.

Apple has yet to release its own sales figures for Apple Watch, leaving market researchers guessing.

According to news reports, chief executive Tim Cook told employees sales of the wrist-worn gadget in the last quarter surpassed iPhone sales in the same period in 2007, the year the iPhone debuted.
