Croatian smart bench exhibited outside EU parliament building

A young Croatian innovator from Solin, Ivan Mrvos, who invented a solar powered smart bench that provides Wi-Fi mobile phone charging and a Wi-Fi spot on Wednesday presented a new, improved version of his bench outside the European Parliament building in Strasbourg.

Mrvos said that the first version of the smart bench had been installed in about a dozen Croatian cities and abroad. The latest smart bench provides Wi-Fi phone charging and a Wi-Fi spot to connect to the Internet.

"The new version has double-layered panels that were developed in cooperation with Croatian companies and have a stronger battery system. Phones can be charged via cables or wireless. It's enough to just place your phone on the bench and it immediately begins to charge," Mrvos said and added that the price of the bench ranged from HRK 13,000 to 16,000 (approx. EUR 1,700 - 2,130) .

Mrvos arrived in Strasbourg at the invitation of Croatian MEP Tonino Picula. "Presentations in European institutions, with the European Parliament being the most important one, open opportunities for people with ideas to introduce themselves in the best possible way and arouse potential buyers' interest. Not just of people who might pass this way but of business people as well," Picula said and added that this was the best possible place to launch a product on the European Union market of 510 million citizens.

Asked about the likelihood that the smart bench might actually be placed in front of the European Parliament and not just exhibited there, Picula said that he thought that the prospects were good.
