Facebook Messenger reaches the 1-billion-user mark

Facebook Messenger, the company's messaging app, has passed the 1 billion user mark, Facebook announced Wednesday.

The app's success adds to Facebook's dominant position in online networking, as it joins the other Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp, which already has more than 1 billion users.

Messenger, which was introduced in 2011, serves as a communication platform both between ordinary Facebook users as well as between businesses and their customers.

It has gained 200 million users since the beginning of the year.

Messenger offers an alternative to other texting apps like WhatsApp, by adding multimedia elements like stickers and gifs. Over 380 million stickers are sent each day on the app, the company said.
