Netflix announces first original series made in Germany

Netflix announced Wednesday that it will produce its first German-language series, a drama set in a small German town in the wake of the mysterious disappearance of two young children.

The 10-episode series, entitled Dark, was described by the streaming service as "a family saga with a supernatural twist."

Dark will be directed by Baran bo Odar, who scored a success last year at the German box office with Who Am I - No System is Safe, and produced by the team behind 2007's Stasi spy thiller, The Lives of Others.

The series, which is set to to be available to Netflix subscribers worldwide in 2017, will be entirely written, shot and produced in Germany, the company said in a statement.

"Dark is an incredible German story that will appeal to a global audience," Erik Barmack, vice president of international originals at Netflix, said in a statement.

The US company, founded in 1997 as a DVD-by-mail service, has transformed into an internet streaming behemoth with 75 million members in 190 countries. It has received critical acclaim with its original TV series, including House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black.
