Abughaush wins taekwondo final for Jordan's first Olympic medal

Ahmad Abughaush won Jordan its first-ever Olympic medal and maiden gold on Thursday in the men's 68-kilogram taekwondo, while Britain's Jade Jones secured herself a back-to-back victory in the women's 57kg class.

Outsider Abughaush defeated Russia's Alexey Denisenko 10-6 in the final.

"It's an indescribable feeling to win the first medal in the history of Jordan in all the sports. It's also a great feeling to listen to the national anthem of Jordan being played in Rio in front of the whole world," he said.

After he and Denisenko struggled to score in the first two rounds, Abugaush dominated in the third with a four-point spinning kick to the head and another three-point high kick.

"There are some certain kicks that are just improvised. They come with the moment," he said.

Abughaush had never managed a top three finish in any international competition before.

Denisenko won silver, adding to his bronze from the men's 58kg competition at the London Olympics.

South Korea's Lee Dae Hoon and Spain's Joel Gonzales Bonilla took the men's bronze medals.

In the women's 57kg class, Jones took control over Spain's Eva Calvo Gomez in her final bout with no fewer than four head kicks, for a final score of 16-7.

The British fighter, who took up taekwondo to stay out of trouble, repeated her gold performance from the 2012 London Games.

"I was just so proud of myself for getting to the final again, so I just felt, you know, the pressure's off I can just absolutely go for it."

"I wanted to become a legend, a double Olympic champion at 23-years-old. I can't believe it," she said.

Egypt's Hedaya Wahba and Iran's Kimia Alizadeh Zenoorin earned bronze medals.
