America's Armstrong wins third straight time trial gold

American Kristin Armstrong came out of retirement a second time to complete a hat-trick of Olympic gold medals in the women's road cycling time trial at the Rio Games on Wednesday.

Armstrong dominated in 44 minutes 26.42 seconds over the 29.7-kilometre distance in wet and slippery conditions, crossing the finish line with a bleeding nose. She returned to the sport for the first time to win in 2012, and again ahead of Rio.

Russia's Olga Zabalinskaya, who got her Olympic berth via a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, trailed by 5.55 seconds to take silver.

Sunday's road race winner Anna van der Breggen of the Netherlands captured bronze, 11.38 seconds off the pace.

The men's time trial was set for later Wednesday.
