Arsenal's Wenger says players weren't fit for start of season

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said his players were "not physically ready" for the start of the season after they were beaten 4-3 at home by Liverpool on Sunday.

Arsenal led 1-0 but were undone by a four-goal blitz in 15 minutes either side of half-time and a late fightback was not enough.

It is the third year in the last four that Arsenal have lost their opening game of the Premier League season and Wenger said it was too soon to recover fully from the European Championship.

"Physically we are not ready," he told the Arsenal website.

"You are in a Catch-22 situation with the Euros. Do you give the players a rest and start the season without many of your players?

"Or do they play in this kind of game and get injured, like (Aaron) Ramsey today?"

There were some boos at the final whistle and Wenger has again been criticised by some fans for not spending big in the summer.

"Some players who came back late were physically short," Wenger said.

"We paid for that. It's a situation where you can only be punished."
