Austria defeat Albania, Hungary and Croatia share spoils

Austria defeated Albania 2-1 in a friendly meeting between Euro 2016 qualifiers Saturday while Hungary and Croatia played out a 1-1 draw.

Marc Janko and Martin Harnik struck inside 13 minutes to give Austria a two-goal lead but Ermir Lenjani pulled one back for Albania in 47. However, they could not find an equalizer and were reduced to 10 men late on as Ergys Kace was dismissed for a second yellow card.

"We wanted to put them under pressure from the beginning and we did that," Janko said in a television interview. "The first half was good but in the second we let them into the game too much.

"We were too passive, that's what let them come into the game better. But at the end of the day all that counts is a victory against a Euro participant."

Hungary are preparing for their first major finals in 30 years but went a goal down to Croatia when Mario Mandzukic converted a cross at the back post in the 29th minute.

But the Hungarians were not to be denied in front of their own fans and Balazs Dzsudzsak levelled 10 minutes from time.

In other games Russia beat Lithuania 3-0 on goals from Fedor Smolov, Aleksandr Golovin and Denis Glushakov and Poland enjoyed a confidence-boosting 5-0 win over Finland.

Kamil Grosicki, Pawel Wszolek and Filip Starzynski all struck before the interval for the Poles with Wszolek and Grosicki completing their braces in the second period against the hapless Finns.

Later Saturday Germany face England in Berlin.
