Briton Cavendish wins first stage of 103rd Tour de France

Britain's Mark Cavendish won the first stage of cycling's 103rd Tour de France Saturday.

It was a 27th stage win for the 31-year-old sprinter but will be the first time he wears the yellow jersey as leader.

Cavendish, of the Dimension Data team, got the better of Germany's Marcel Kittel (Etixx-Quickstep) in a sprint finish, with Slovakian world champion Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) third.

The 21-stage three-week tour got underway from Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, with the opening stage a 188-kilometre run to Sainte-Marie-du-Mont.

The stage finished near Utah Beach, where the first American troops landed on June 6, 1944, as part of the D-Day landings.

The peloton will arrive on the Champs-Elysees in Paris on Sunday July 24 at the end of the 3,545km tour.

Defending champion Chris Froome (Team Sky) of Britain is hoping to win a third Tour de France title and become the first man in 20 years to win consecutive Tours.

Spain's two-time winner Alberto Contador and one of the Tour favourites crashed early in the stage and had to be treated for shoulder grazing clearly visible under a ripped jersey, but was able to continue.

After changing his bike, he was joined by several of his Tinkoff team-mates and others caught up in the crash to close back up on the peloton.
