China's Wu with unprecedented fourth straight synchro-diving gold

China's Wu Minxia became the first woman to win the same event at four successive Summer Olympics on Sunday when she teamed up with Shi Tingmao for the 3-metre springboard synchronised diving title.

Wu and Shi dominated with 345.60 points to get gold ahead of Italy's Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape, and the Australian pair of Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith.

Wu previously won the competition in 2004, 2008 and 2012.

China are aiming to sweep the four women's diving events for the third Olympics in a row at the Rio Games.

No woman has ever won the same individual event four times in a row, a feat achieved on the men's side only by American discus thrower Al Oerter (1956-1986) and long jumper Carl Lewis (1984-1996).

Canadians Hayley Wickenheiser and Jayna Hefford meanwhile have four straight ice hockey golds from Winter Olympics 2002-2014.
