Chinese 15-year-old Ren Qian wins platform diving gold

Ren Qian on Thursday won a battle of Chinese teenagers in the women's 10-metre platform event to become the third youngest Olympic diving champion.

Ren, 15, amassed 439.25 points as she beat her 17-year-old team-mate Si Yajie who finished on 419.40. Bronze went to Canada's Meaghan Benfeito with 389.20 points.

"I focused on each individual dive and I think that's why I got the medal," Ren said, though she felt her performane was "not really so perfect," for her own high standards.

The only younger diving champions are American Marjorie Gestrink (3m springboard 1936) and China's Fu Minxia (10m platform 1992) who were 13 at the time of their success.

Being a teenage gold medallist is likely to change Ren's life but she admitted she had not yet taken it in.

"I'm not fully aware in what ways [this will happen]," she said. "This is my feeling, my gut feeling, that possibly it will."

Germany also had a 15-year-old entrant in Elena Wassen but she went out in the semi-finals.

China swept the women's diving events for the third straight Games but their aim to get all eight golds in the sport overall was spoilt by Britons Chris Mears and Jack Laugher who won the synchronised 3m springboard event.

The Rio diving events conclude with the men's platform competition on Saturday.
