CONCACAF chief agrees extradition to US

Suspended senior FIFA official Alfredo Hawit has agreed to be extradited to the United States on corruption charges, Swiss officials said Wednesday.

Hawit, president of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and a vice president of world governing body FIFA, was arrested on December 3 in Zurich.

The Swiss Federal Office of Justice said Hawit from Honduras agreed to be extradited.

"The Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) was therefore able to approve his extradition immediately in a simplified procedure," a statement said.

Hawit was arrested following a warrant by US authorities accusing him of accepting bribes totalling millions of dollars relating to the sale of marketing rights to football tournaments in Latin America.

Hawit had contested his extradition in a first hearing by Zurich cantonal police immediately after his arrest, but agreed Wednesday at a second hearing.

Hawit must be collected by a US police escort and taken to the United States within 10 days, the statement said.

Hawit was arrested along with Juan Angel Napout of Paraguay, a FIFA vice president and president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL).

They have been provisionally suspended by FIFA's ethics committee for 90 days. Napout was extradited on December 15.
