Croatia Beats US in Davis Cup; Britain, France, Argentina book semifinal spots

Britain, France and Argentina reached the semifinals of the Davis Cup World Group on Sunday, while the US was denied a spot by Croatia in a stunning 3-2 comeback.

Former US open winner Marin Cilic, who had lost his last two matches at Wimbledon and on Friday while leading two sets to love, knocked out US number one John Isner, 7-6 (11-9), 6-3, 6-4 for a 2-2 score.

Teenaged Borna Coric finished the weekend's work in style, defeating Jack Sock 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the storming fightback.

"We played amazing team tennis all weekend," said Cilic. "Borna played amazing tennis and managed unbelievably to fight, to stay in there."

Croatia will play France in the semis.

Kyle Edmund sent defending champion Britain into the final four with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) defeat of Serbian Dusan Lajovic.

The victory in two and a half hours for a 3-1 winning result came as idle Andy Murray watched from the bench, after ruling himself out of the quarterfinal tie following his second Wimbledon title last weekend.

Edmund, ranked a modest 67th, won both of his rubbers, beating Janko Tipsarevic in opening singles to get the visitors off to the best possible start.

Britain will face a home tie September 16-18 against Argentina, after Federico Delbonis helped the South Americans over the line in an away victory against Italy in Pesaro.

Delbonis iced the result by beating Italian number one Fabio Fognini - who was playing for a third consecutive day - 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

Argentina fielded former number four Juan Del Potro for the first time since 2012, after a prolonged wrist injury. The side is into an 11th semifinal appearance.

France booked a spot as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga assured a 3-1 victory, defeating 50th-ranked Czech Jiri Vesely 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 5-4, 7-5 as he came from a set down.

"From the start of the match everything was going wrong for me," said the top Frenchman. "So many break points, so many balls to make it which I didn't.

"At the end I told myself, 'You fought all along for the match and you deserve to win so you will make it.' Finally the match turned but it was hard."

"This weekend we won with the group," Tsonga said. "They played really well in the doubles and gave me the opportunity to finish, so today is the win of the group."
