Division of opinion in Barcelona about naming stadium after Cruyff

There is a clear division of opinion in Barcelona about the idea of naming the club's remodelled stadium after former club captain and coach Johann Cruyff, to judge by an online poll taken Monday.

Cruyff played for Barca between 1973 and 1978, and coached them between 1988 and 1996. He passed away March 24 at the age of 68 after a long battle against lung cancer.

More than 31,000 people have paid their last respects to Cruyff outside the club's Camp Nou stadium in the past four days, with many leaving flowers and messages of condolences.

Several sections of the Catalan media have suggested that the Camp Nou - which is to be extensively remodelled between 2017 and 20121 - should now be named after Cruyff.

However, a poll published Monday by daily paper Sport showed only 53 per cent of readers in favour of this, with 47 per cent opposed.

Cruyff was named "President of Honour" by Barca president Joan Laporta in 2010, just before he stepped down. His successor Sandro Rosell controversially cancelled this appointment, claiming that such a position was not included in the club's official statutes.

Current Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu - who took over from Rosell in 2014 - said Sunday that he will announce later this week his decision about how Cruyff will be officially commemorated.
