England will be hoping to improve their poor record in the knock-out stages of major tournaments when they play Iceland in Nice on Monday - and if necessary banish their penalty shoot-out demons.
Since winning the World Cup in 1966, England have only progressed six times in 17 matches at a World Cup or European Championship.
The last victory in a knock-out match is 10 years ago.
In 50 years there have been just three wins in regular 90 minutes of playing time (against Paraguay, Denmark and Ecuador) two in extra-time (Belgium, Cameroon) and one in a penalty shoot-out (Spain).
England have lost six of seven matches which have gone to penalty shoot-outs - a sorry catalogue of failures from the spot which began with a semi-final defeat to West Germany at the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
Defender Stuart Pearce had his penalty saved, and Chris Waddle blasted his over the bar in Turin to become the first in a rogue's gallery of players who have missed from the spot, including Gareth Southgate and David Beckham.
Former England manager and player Glenn Hoddle said there was no point in practising penalties because you could never reproduce the pressure of a match.
England, with Hoddle in charge, went out of the 1998 World Cup in France at the last-16 stage after losing in a penalty shoot-out to Argentina, when Paul Ince and David Batty missed.
The current squad under Roy Hodgson will not be unprepared - they have been practising every day, Wayne Rooney said this week.
"We don't practice in terms of 'you're number one, you're number two', but we practice penalties and we go through the rhythm you would in a game although obviously it is different with the crowd and the pressure," he said.
Rooney also things the penalties curse could be buried if it again comes down to a shoot-out.
"The good thing about this squad is there aren't any players who have been in a shoot-out for England and missed," he said.
