Guardiola demands Man City play with soul as he prepares for debut

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said on Friday it would take time to create a team in his image but he expects them to give 100 per cent from the start.

The charismatic Spaniard begins his reign as City manager with a home match against Sunderland on Saturday.

Having changed the face of football with his Barcelona team and then led Bayern Munich to heights in Germany, Guardiola's arrival is perhaps the most anticipated of all this season.

The former Spain midfielder said introducing his famous style may take time but that he expected them to play with their hearts on their sleeves.

"To create something you need time, to create ideas to attack, but for soul we don’t need time," he told a press conference.

"Tomorrow I don't know if we're going to play good but I won't accept if we don't play with soul.

"We play tomorrow from the first day. That's what I’m looking for from our team. I want our fans in the Etihad to see that. I want my players to play their football with pleasure inside."

Guardiola says new signing John Stones, a 47.5 million-pound defender from Everton, will play a part.

"He's fit, I hope he will be really important," he said. "He's a big talent. I think he’s a good player. He is ready."

"I know 80/90 percent who's going to play tomorrow but I'll sleep on it," he said.

"It's almost done – not quite 100 per cent, I need my dreams to make the right decision."
