IOC will retest all Russian drug-test samples from Sochi 2014

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will conduct retests on all drug-test samples taken from Russian athletes at the Sochi 2014 Games after allegations of doping and tampering, IOC president Thomas Bach said Saturday.

Bach said the IOC was acting upon a report published last month by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) investigator Richard McLaren, which revealed state-sponsored doping, including manipulation schemes at the Winter Games at home two years ago.

Bach said at a news conference in Rio de Janeiro that the IOC disciplinary committee has started working on the matter.

"We have to address doping testing in Sochi, not only the system as such but also the Russian athletes competing in Sochi. All samples of all Russian athletes will be analyzed regarding doping and tampering," he said.

While defending the decision of the IOC not to impose a blanket ban on Russia for the Rio Games despite the grave allegations in the McLaren report, Bach reiterated that the claims, if true, constituted "an unprecedented attack on Olympic integrity."

Looking at the Russian doping schemes, Bach also said that the IOC could not change its charter to let Russian whistleblower Yulia Stepanova compete in Rio, and also insisted that the IOC was not responsible for her safety.

WADA said that Stepanova's account was recently hacked. Stepanova, who is in hiding with her husband Vitaly, said she was fearing for her life as the account also includes data on where she lives.
