Daniele Garozzo won gold for Italy at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics Sunday when he beat world ranking leader Alexander Massialas of the United States 15-11 in the foil fencing final.
Although Italy is dominant in fencing, Garozzo, 24, achieved the first Italian men's individual foil victory since the 1996 Games in Atlanta.
Male US fencers have been waiting even longer for Olympic Gold, since the 1904 Olympics in St Louis.
The bronze went to Russia's Timur Safin, who beat British veteran Richard Kruse 15-13 for third place.
Garozzo's win came one day after fellow Italian Rossella Fiamingo won silver in the women's individual epee event. Just minutes earlier Sunday Fabio Basile had won Italy's first Rio gold, in judo.
