ITF clears the decks for overhaul of Davis and Fed Cup formats

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) on Wednesday said it was preparing to wipe the slate clean in preparation for a massive overhaul to the century-old format for the Davis Cup.

Under a proposal driven by new ITF supremo David Haggerty, the home-and-away format for the annual final in the international competitions of the Davis Cup for men and Fed Cup for women looks set to be replaced by a choice of venue several years in advance.

The system is used in many other events such as the Champions League final and Super Bowl to build up interest and attract sponsors years in advance.

The radical process is expected to move in a leisurely fashion, with the proposals only set to be presented for a vote in August, 2017, at a general assembly.

The bidding protocol or cities interested in hosting either the Davis or Fed Cup Finals will begin in December, with a decision made by next summer.

"The potential changes outlined today will help these unique international team tennis competitions to grow and prosper," Haggerty said in a statement.

"Davis and Fed Cup remain the world's largest annual team events in sport; a fixed final for Davis Cup will replicate the approach - seen in many other sports - for the tennis season's finale that players, fans, partners and broadcasters can better plan for."

Plans also call for expanding the Fed Cup to a 16-team World Group and introduction of a final four series to add spice to the year-end tournament conclusion.
